Spider-Man: Homecoming is Sony’s second reboot for the web crawler, and it has been a successful one. Imagine that, teaming up with Marvel Studios, a company that has a great track record, has proven very fruitful. It’s so fruitful that the film has grossed $823 million worldwide at the box office, beating out Wonder Woman’s $816 million.
Spider-Man: Homecoming opening in China has helped push the box office gross, earning $70.8 million
This gives the film the #6 spot for 2017’s worldwide box office, just behind Wolf Warrior 2‘s $852.6 million. You’re probably thinking, “What the hell is Wolf Warrior 2?” It’s a Chinese action film that features a certain actor in the MCU, Frank Grillo (Captain America: The Winter Soldier). With that said, the top four films of 2017 are Beauty and the Beast ($1.3 billion), The Fate of the Furious ($1.2 billion), Despicable Me 3 ($1 billion) and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 ($863 million).
It looks like Spider-Man: Homecoming may be able to tower over Wolf Warrior 2 and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 if it can continue the momentum. If it does, it will be the #1 superhero movie of 2017 so far.
Right now, the film is the #2 Spider-Man film at the worldwide box office (not including inflation) and beats out Spider-Man ($821.7 million) and Spider-Man 2 ($783.8 million). As for the domestic box office, it’s at the fourth spot behind the Raimi trilogy but tops the Webb films.
It is currently the #1 film over the weekend with $123 million at the domestic box office.
