J.J. Abrams and Paramount Pictures are doing a live-action version of the Makoto Shinkai anime Your Name

J.J. Abrams is set to take on a live-action adaptation of the 2016 Makoto Shinkai anime Your Name for Paramount Pictures, according to THR. The script will be written by Arrival‘s Eric Heisserer, who was nominated for an Academy Award for his work on the Denis Villeneuve film. Your Name was written and directed by Shinkai and was the fourth-highest grossing film of all time in Japan. It also earned $355 million worldwide, making it the highest grossing anime ever. Abrams will produce through his Bad Robot with Lindsey Weber. Genki Kawamura, who produced the anime, is also on board to produce the live-action version. You can watch the English-dubbed trailer for Your Name in the player below.

Your Name is the story of a young girl named Mitsuha who lives in a small town, unhappy with her life. Her father isn’t around and she’s teased at school. She wishes to come back as a handsome boy who lives in Tokyo in her next life. Meanwhile, a handsome boy in Tokyo named Taki ends up switching bodies with Mitsuha after a comet is seen in the sky. They help each other cope with difficulties, even though they can’t speak to each other. They start to have feelings for each other, but they’re not only separated by cities, they’re also separated by time.

Shinkai, who cites Hayao Miyazaki (Spirited Away) as a major influence, said in a statement to the site, “Your Name is a film created with the innate imaginations of a Japanese team and put together in a domestic medium. When such a work is imbued with Hollywood filmmaking, we may see new possibilities that we had been completely unaware of. I am looking forward to the live-action film with excited anticipation.”
