Game of Thrones is arguably the most popular show of this decade and it’s no surprise that HBO would want to protect their hot commodity. With the show entering its final season and production beginning in October, HBO has taken a few precautionary steps to ensure the integrity of the show stays intact.
The plan is to film multiple endings for the series finale, so that no one will really know what’s going to happen until it airs. This is coming off of multiple leaks HBO experienced during the airing of Season 7. Not only was the fourth episode leaked, but draft scripts for five other episodes were compromised as well.
This move is similar to what The Walking Dead did for their Season 7 premiere, with filming multiple deaths for different characters. This ensured that only a handful of people knew what would really happen. I think this is a great move, as it also stems actors from accidentally spilling the beans. And if a leak were still to occur, it would be pinpointed immediately.
In a recent interview with The Morning Call, HBO’s President of Programming had this to say: “I know in Game of Thrones, the ending, they’re going to shoot multiple versions so that nobody really know what happens. You have to do that on a long show. Because when you’re shooting something, people know. So they’re going to shoot multiple versions so that there’s no real definitive answer until the end.”
