Matt Reeves clarifies ‘standalone’ comments on The Batman, confirms DCEU placement

Fans found themselves in a tizzy yesterday following an interview with director Matt Reeves indicating that the upcoming solo Batman movie would not be part of the larger DCEU. Now, however, Reeves has taken to Twitter to clarify his remarks and confirm the film will be part of the larger cinematic universe, just that it won’t have ties to the other films.

“Just to be clear: Of COURSE Batman will be part of the D.C. Universe. Batman will be BATMAN… In my comments from a while back about not being part of the DCEU, I was talking about The Batman being a story specifically about Batman not about the others in the Universe. That it wouldn’t be filled with cameos servicing other stories — that it would be a BATMAN story.”

While it was thought shooting would begin later this year on The Batman, it now looks like cameras won’t roll until 2018. The film has yet to receive a proper green light from the studio, and it is believed Reeves is doing a massive rewrite that could radically alter Ben Affleck’s original vision for the story.

In The Batman, Ben Affleck is expected to face off as the title hero against Joe Manganiello, who would play Slade Wilson, aka Deathstroke, in the film. Additional appearances by Jeremy Irons as Alfred and J.K. Simmons as Commissioner Gordon are expected to happen as well. However, given the changes to the script since Reeves’ arrival, it remains to be seen who or what will be in the film.

Reeves (CloverfieldDawn of the Planet of the Apes) will direct the film. An official release date for The Batman, written by Affleck and Geoff Johns, hasn’t been set. Affleck will next appear as Batman in Justice League, opening in theaters on November 17. You can view photos from that film in the gallery below.
