Because Switch third-party support is slow to pick up momentum, it is always good news when a well-known series comes over to the hybrid console. Well, good news has arrived again in the form of 2K Games’ WWE 2K18. The popular wrestling franchise will release on the Switch this fall, and it comes as a mild surprise. Consider the history.
According to a 2K Games blog post, WWE games were previously absent from Nintendo consoles for five years. The lack of Wii U sales made it difficult for companies to justify bringing their games over. Lack of hardware power made porting slightly more difficult too. But the company wishes to emphasize the Switch version will not be watered down.
“Like the other available versions of WWE 2K18, it includes a whole host of new features.”
“Get ready for eight man matches, a new grapple carry system, new weight detection, thousands of new animations and a massive backstage area. A brand-new rendering engine also gives WWE 2K18 a visual overhaul and will bring the drama of WWE to life like never before.”
Also, expect an in-depth career mode.
“A new MyCareer experience puts you on the path to greatness as you journey along on the road to WrestleMania. Explore WWE like never before through free-roaming backstage, conversing with WWE Superstars, forming alliances, making enemies, seeking out quests, and strategizing for upcoming matches.”
There is a revamped online mode as well.
“Introducing the all-new Road to Glory. Compete with opponents online to improve your MyPlayer by earning unlockables, boosts and upgrades all while securing your entry into special events that are held alongside real-life WWE special events, such as pay-per-views.”
Remember that playing Switch games online will remain free through the end of this year.
As for the actual release date, right now the website states “Fall 2017” for the Switch. However, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One users get to play as early as Oct. 13 for deluxe and special-edition purchases, and Oct. 17 for everyone else.
But the fact 2K Games chose to bring this title over to the Switch at all is a good sign. WWE star Seth Rollins even helped out and participated in a commercial promoting the upcoming Switch release. He delivered his lines well.
Clearly 2K Games is properly hyping up the Switch edition and not just releasing it as an afterthought.
As a final note, those who pre-order the game can play as WWE Hall of Fame Legend Kurt Angle. In fact, gamers can play as “two playable versions of WWE Hall of Famer Kurt Angle: his WWE “American Hero” persona (2001) or his ECW “Wrestling Machine” persona (2006).” No news on whether his victory celebration involves dousing himself with milk.
Look forward to WWE 2K18 this fall on the Switch, whenever it comes out.
