Theories and Observations: An analysis of the ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ D23 footage

After hours of sitting upon what we saw at D23 Expo, it’s time to talk about some of the theories and observations that we found during the EPIC D23 trailer. If you haven’t read about the trailer yet then be sure to read up on that first. Also, remember that there may be some potential spoilers ahead. Ready? Then here we go.

Planet Hulk - Blu-ray Cover

1. Sakaar will be destroyed at the end of Thor: Ragnarok

It’s not that surprising that The Grandmaster’s planet will be destroyed at the end of Thor: Ragnarok. First, Sakaar is blown up by Miek during Greg Pak’s incredible “Planet Hulk” storyline. Second, the Guardians say that they’re there for an ex-con. It makes sense for an ex-con to be found in a criminal planet like Sakaar than Asgard. Third, Thor is found by the Guardians floating alone in space with massive debris around him. If you’ve ever seen Star Wars: A New Hope then you know what has happened.

Now, the reasoning behind Thanos destroying Sakaar is unknown. However, one can imagine that it has something to do with an Infinity Stone being found on there. This brings me to my next theory…

2. The Grandmaster has possession of the Reality Stone

You’re probably wondering why I’m saying it’s the Reality Stone and not the Soul Stone. Well, I believe that the Soul Stone will be found in Black Panther. In the comics, Necropolis is the Wakandan City of the Dead. It is a place where Black Panthers go to talk to their dead ancestors for their knowledge and advice. The soul gem has the ability to “observe, attack or even steal a being’s soul or spirit.” It only makes sense to introduce the soul stone as a way for T’Challa to talk to his ancestors in Necropolis.

With this in mind, let’s look at the common thread between Thor: Ragnarok and Guardians of the Galaxy. The Grandmaster and The Collector are brothers and are seemingly close. We also know that The Grandmaster is a fan of games as depicted by his love for gladiatorial games. It could be that The Grandmaster won the Reality Stone from The Collector in a game and has kept it with him on Sakaar. Thus, Thanos gaining possession of the Reality Stone in the battle against our heroes.

Thanos and the Black Order

3. Iron Man and Captain America call a truce to protect Vision from Thanos and the Black Order

After it seems that our heroes know what Thanos is on Earth for, it’s time for Tony to call for help. Back in March, set pictures were taken that include Scarlet Witch, Hawkeye, and Vision battling members of the Black Order in Edinburgh. In case you forgot, both Scarlet Witch and Hawkeye were imprisoned on the Raft until Captain America broke them out. In addition, Cap gave Tony a note that says: “If you need us. If you need me. I’ll be there.”

Unfortunately for Vision, one of those set videos includes either Corvus Glaive or Proxima Midnight taking Vision away… Two down, four to go.

Captain America: Civil War - Bucky/Winter Soldier

4. Winter Soldier and Black Panther

Remember in the Captain America: Civil War post-credits scene where T’Challa helps Cap out by putting Bucky to cryo sleep? Time to wake him up. In the Avengers: Infinity War footage, we see Bucky standing alongside Black Panther in one of the scenes. However, we don’t know if T’Challa wakes Bucky up during Infinity War or Black Panther. If my theory is correct then Thanos meets Black Panther and Bucky to retrieve the Soul Stone from Necropolis.

Three down, three to go.

Thor: The Dark World - Tom Hiddleston

5. The Tesseract in Odin’s vault

Never make a deal with the devil. Loki is going to find out about this the hard way in Avengers: Infinity War. After making a deal with Thanos to conquer Earth, Loki failed to deliver on his part of the deal. Now, with Loki pretending to be Odin and ruling Asgard. One would assume that Loki has the ability to open up Odin’s vault and give Thanos the Tesseract. This is exactly what happens as one of the scenes depicts Loki handing the Tesseract to either Thanos or Black Dwarf. Yet one can assume that Thanos is not the type to take failure lightly. With Hiddleston’s contract up soon, is Infinity War the film where Loki truly meets his end?

Four stones down, two to go.

6. Bye, bye Xandar?

In the final breathtaking scene, we see Thanos using both the Reality and Power stones to destroy a moon. The last time we’ve seen the Power Stone, it was locked away in a vault deep within Xandar. With the Nova Corps decimated by the hands of Ronan, there will be little resistance by the Nova Corps in stopping the Mad Titan from gaining what he wants. Poor Xandar.

Luckily for our heroes, I believe that the epic battle between the Guardians and Avengers takes place in the beginning of the film since Thanos only has two stones at the time.

Five stones down, one to go.

Doctor Strange - The Eye of Agamotto

7. The last line of defense is Doctor Strange?

The final stone that Thanos needs is the Time stone which is within the Eye of Agamotto. In the various scenes containing Doctor Strange, he has the Eye around his neck. These recent set pictures with Doctor Strange, Tony Stark, Wong, and Bruce Banner, we still see that the Eye of Agamotto is still around his neck. It’s my guess that the Illuminati Avengers are on the search for the rest of the stones before Thanos finds them all.

As the Avengers and their allies have continued to protect the world from threats too large for any one hero to handle, a new danger has emerged from the cosmic shadows: Thanos.
