Following a question on Twitter from a fan, future Nightwing director Chris McKay opens up about his vision of the film in a series of tweets. In his responses to fan questions, he gave some great insight on what to expect out of the story of Dick Grayson.
“The story of Dick Grayson, becoming Robin, then becoming Nightwing played out for us, the audience, in the comics in REAL TIME.” He then continued, “It wasn’t a flashback. We experienced it. So all of Robin/Nightwing’s successes and failures we were along for the ride.”
He went on to say, “And people that underestimated Robin or dismissed him perhaps had their opinions changed as we watched him grow up right in front of us.” He finished with, “His relationships, his conflicts with Batman et al felt real to me because he was the window character with which we experienced Gotham city.”
Here’s the DC wiki on Nightwing: Dick Grayson was the son of John and Mary Grayson. The family was a circus act that performed at Haly’s Circus. One night Dick sees his parents murdered by a mafia boss who wants revenge on the circus’s owner, Haly, and coincidentally Bruce Wayne, (a.k.a. Batman) witnesses the terrifying act and offers to take the young orphan by his side remembering that he was once like Dick in his current state. Dick had keen detective skills already and soon figured out that the billionaire playboy Bruce Wayne was the Dark Knight himself. Bruce agreed to take Dick under his wing as the first Robin out of many. Many years passed and Dick became too old to stay under Batman’s care and soon took a superhero name of his own, Nightwing!
Chris McKay is directing the Nightwing which is being written by The Accountant‘s Bill Dubuque.
