There may be no better pairing in Hollywood than director Martin Scorsese and superstar Leonardo DiCaprio. They haven’t just made a slew of films together, but they’ve made some of the best and most influential films of the last few decades. At one time, Robert De Niro was the legendary director’s golden boy, but DiCaprio took up the crown some time ago and it looks like their relationship will continue. The unstoppable duo will team up yet again for a film adaptation of the true-crime thriller Killers of The Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI, which will be their sixth feature film together.
The film will be based on the bestselling book by David Grann who also wrote The Lost City of Z whose film adaptation came out earlier this year. Set in the 1920s, the story focuses on a string of murders of members of the Osage nation in Oklahoma after oil was discovered beneath their land. The chilling series of slayings was one of the fledgling FBI’s first major homicide investigations.
Imperative entertainment quickly obtained the rights to the story last year for a reported $5 million. As well, Scorsese and DiCaprio apparently have been eyeing the project for months. They’re developing the film with the help of Dan Friedkin and Bradley Thomas, co-founders of Imperative entertainment. Reports say Oscar-winning screenwriter Eric Roth has already drafted a script.
Scorsese’s longtime production designer, Dante Ferretti, told Variety that Scorsese hoped to start shooting Flower Moon in the spring of next year. He said he was going to go to Oklahoma for preliminary location scouting for the movie. Additionally, John Atwood, Imperative’s chief financial officer, said in an e-mail that “we are currently conducting preliminary research on the film, but there are no formal attachments nor confirmed start date at this time.”
Ferretti expects to “start preparing this film in September because Scorsese will shoot it immediately after finishing The Irishman.” Even with DiCaprio on board, it’s going to be hard to beat that movie. The Irishman will star Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Joe Pesci and Harvey Keitel, four legends of cinema. That’s a tough act to follow, though Martin Scorsese is probably the right man to try and top a Martin Scorsese film
