Neill Blomkamp on District 9 follow-up and Alien concept

District 9
Two weeks ago, District 9 director Neill Blomkamp released a teaser trailer on YouTube about his upcoming projects under Under Oats Studios. He plans to release several of the experimental projects online in the near future. Two new trailers have been released since then, giving us a good look at his upcoming short films, Volume 1, and it looks intense. Previously, he has given us several movies that appear experimental itself, the first being District 9. From there he made Elysium, Chappie and was tapped to make Alien 5.

Not much has been heard since then regarding Alien 5. And with the release of Alien: Covenant, it appears that Blomkamp is no longer working on Alien 5. In a recent interview with The Verge, he had this to say when asked about his Alien concept being done:

“I think it’s totally dead, yes. That would be an accurate assumption at this point. It’s sad. I spent a long time working on that, and I feel like it was really pretty awesome. But politically, the way it’s gone now, and the way that it all is — it’s just not going to live.”

It’s a shame that his Alien concept has been getting the ax. He gave us some good art pieces he was working on. With the visual work of his films, his Alien concept film would’ve looked intense. The most common question came up in the interview regarding District 9 since it left us wondering what happened to Wikus and if the ship would return.

“With District 9, I plan on making another film in that world,” said Blomkamp. “To go back and work with WETA, and make the film would be cool, but anything that preexists like that may not be the best fit for whatever we’re trying here.”

It seems as if a sequel for District 9 isn’t in the books yet. Another film in the same world could bridge a potential sequel. There’s a lot that can happen during the 3-year trip for the return of the ship and potential cure for Wikus. The focus could be more on what happened at the MNU building and the illegal experiments they conducted. Until then, we have Oats Studios Volume 1 to look forward to.
