It would seem like the Star Wars’ Han Solo movie is getting some trouble. Josh Trank was previously attached to a Star Wars film, and it’s speculated that it was this one. Now we have news from Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy and directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller confirming that Lucasfilm and the directors have agreed to split due to “creative differences.”
“Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are talented filmmakers who have assembled an incredible cast and crew, but it’s become clear that we had different creative visions on this film, and we’ve decided to part ways. A new director will be announced soon,” said Kathleen Kennedy in a statement on the Star Wars website.
“Unfortunately, our vision and process weren’t aligned with our partners on this project. We normally aren’t fans of the phrase ‘creative differences’ but for once this cliché is true. We are really proud of the amazing and world-class work of our cast and crew,” added Phil Lord and Christopher Miller.
The Han Solo film has been filming since February at the historic Pinewood Studios in London.
Will the Han Solo Movie Be Back on Track?
It sounds like it’s a mutual agreement, but can this have devastating repercussions for the final product? If this happened during pre-production, then it probably wouldn’t be a huge deal. When Trank left the untitled Star Wars project, many were quick to point fingers at the director due to his negative publicity involving the Fantastic Four film. With Lord and Miller leaving, it does raise some questions. The two’s works have been receiving positive reviews and are box office successes. They include 21 Jump Street, The LEGO Movie and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. Lucasfilm must have seen promise with the two, but that ship has now sailed.
The untitled Han Solo film is still looking for its director. Lawrence Kasdan and his son, Jon Kasdan, have written the script. However, it will still star Alden Ehrenreich as the fan-favorite scoundrel as made famous by Harrison Ford. Donald Glover joins as Lando Calrissian, along with Emilia Clarke (HBO’s “Game of Thrones”), Thandie Newton (HBO’s “Westworld”), Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Woody Harrelson (War for the Planet of the Apes), Michael K. Williams, and Ian Kenny.
The origin movie will follow a young Han Solo. Audiences will get to see how he’ll get a hold of the Millennium Falcon. And they’ll also witness Han meeting Chewbacca for the first time. In addition, Harrelson will be playing a criminal and Han’s mentor.
There will be more re-shoots for the summer.
The standalone Han Solo movie blasts into theaters on May 25, 2018.
