VR is something that I have not considered investing in for a while. (You can thank the hefty price tag and the small selection of titles for that.) But after trying out Archangel, a new experience being crafted by SkyDance Interactive, I’m one step closer to finally purchasing a VR headset.
Archangel places you inside the cockpit of a six-story high walking mech. Using the weapons and tools at your disposal, you must stop an evil corporation from taking over post-apocalyptic America. I played the two demos on Oculus and was immediately dumbfounded by the detail in the cockpit and the two controls my character were holding to control the mech. When I would get the chance, I would bring those two controllers up to my face just to see how detailed they were.
Speaking of controls, Archangel is an on-rails shooter that takes advantage of every button on the Oculus Rift’s Touch controllers. Each controller provides different projectile weapons and must be aimed individually. This was something I forgot while playing as I clumsily shot a missile in the other direction. If you grip the buttons closest to your thumbs, the mech’s hands will clench into fists to use for punching obstacles that will get in your way.
Your mech starts it with shields (one for each hand), a machine gun, and missile launcher. You’ll unlock more weapons throughout the game such as a rail gun and lock-on missiles. The first demo was set in a collapsed city overcome by a desert. Infantry soldiers, tanks, and jets will be there to hinder your progress, but this first level was pretty easy. However, the second demo I couldn’t even finish due to its high difficulty. There is also a story in Archangel being told in-game through voice-acting between the pilot and his comrades.
All I can say right now is that I wish I had a VR headset. SkyDance Interactive’s Archangel is bound to be a hit on every VR platform (PSVR, Rift, Vive). And I recommend every VR owner to keep their eyes on this game when it launches this summer!
