With less than a month remaining until its release, Universal Pictures have released a new behind-the-scenes featurette of The Mummy. In it, we get a closer glimpse of what to expect in the film as well as our first taste of Prodigium. Now Prodigium is a sort of secret society whose purpose is finding, analyzing and fighting evil, namely monsters. Heading this organization is none other than Russell Crowe’s Dr. Jekyll. He’s essentially the equivalent of what Nick Fury is to S.H.I.E.L.D.
Like Fury, Jekyll may be eventually creating a team to take on these monsters at some point. This is all part of Universal’s plan to establish a full-on Monster Universe, similar to how Marvel and DC have theirs. I think the idea of Prodigium is a genius way to be able to tie everything in together cohesively. Here’s what director Alex Kurtzman had to say in regards to Prodigium:
“They study the mythologies in monsters, the histories of them. It’s a science for them, and what I liked about that idea is if we’re going to ground the monsters in a reality, then let’s ground it in science.”
What’s even more awesome (in my opinion), is that their base of operations is located at the Natural History Museum, which pretty much gives them access to all of its resources for research on monsters. Last but not least, the featurette gives us a tease of something we were hoping to see come to fruition, Dr. Jekyll alter-ego Mr. Hyde. It’s only a glimpse that flashes fairly quickly, but it’s certainly something we’re going to want to keep an eye on in the overall franchise.
As of right now, the only other Monster films slated for the future are Dracula, The Wolfman, Frankenstein’s monster, the Creature from the Black Lagoon and the Invisible Man. There’s no word yet whether or not Tom Cruise will appear in the other films of the Monster Universe, but I’m hoping he will.
The Mummy hits theaters on June 9.
