Legacy character confirmed in Star Wars: The Last Jedi?

Star Wars: The Last Jedi
Fans constantly speculate about a possible “Force Ghost” appearance from one of the old Jedi in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. After all, Master Yoda needed some advice when taking a young Luke Skywalker under his wing in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back. Subsequently, the deceased Obi-Wan Kenobi made an appearance as a ghost to offer wisdom.

For Star Wars: The Last Jedi, scheduled to open on December 15, the same scenario might happen for “Master” Luke Skywalker. Considering where Star Wars: The Force Awakens left off, The Last Jedi (possible spoiler?) is expected to feature Luke giving Rey a few Jedi pointers on the island. During this training, maybe Yoda will return as a ghost to offer advice?

A Variety interview with Frank Oz from March certainly lends its hand to the possibility. In fact, Oz arguably confirms Yoda’s appearance with his “non-answer” answer.

Oz told the interviewer, “I feel like I’m a prisoner at war here. And I can only give you my name, rank and serial number. To be true to the people who asked me, and they are kind of my family, I have to say I’ve been asked not to talk about it. I love Yoda. I would be happy to talk to you about it at the time they let me.”

Why would Frank Oz give such an evasive answer unless Yoda had a definite role?

Even if Yoda had a part in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the role could be a very small one. During the flashback sequence with Rey in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Yoda’s voice appeared only briefly.

Oz and The Force Awakens

Oz actually recorded original lines for The Force Awakens according to some reports. To the disappointment of many, those lines were cut from the movie.

In conclusion, Yoda likely plays a small role in The Last Jedi. The role could be a very small one though, and Yoda still could be cut again before the film releases. The answer Oz gave to Variety is a good sign at least.
