Justice League is set to be one of the most anticipated and biggest films of the year, uniting numerous DC heroes under one roof. Zack Snyder has been steering the ship throughout the past 2 films (Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice) as well as the upcoming JL. That’s about to change due to tragic circumstances. During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, both Zack Snyder and his wife Deborah (whom is also a producer on JL) announced they will be stepping away from the film to be with their family.
This comes after they broke the silence of their daughter Autumn’s unfortunate and untimely death by suicide, which occurred back in March. They had decided to keep the death a secret until now. I can’t imagine how difficult it must have been for both Zack and Deborah to continue working through such a difficult time. Here’s what Zack had to say in regards to that:
“In my mind, I thought it was a cathartic thing to go back to work, to just bury myself and see if that was way through it. The demands of this job are pretty intense. It is all consuming. And in the last two months I’ve come to the realization…I’ve decided to take a step back from the movie to be with my family, be with my kids, who really need me. They are all having a hard time. I’m having a hard time.”
I completely understand they’re needing to take time for themselves and their family, as it is truly a tragedy. Even though principal photography wrapped up already as well as some post production (with some reshoots), there’s still a lot to be done. Luckily, Joss Whedon has come to the rescue. He will be stepping in to help complete the film and make sure it’s ready for the November 17th release date. Warner Bros. President Toby Emmerich offered a lot of positive feedback regarding Whedon coming on board:
“The directing is minimal and it has to adhere to the style and tone and the template that Zack set. We’re not introducing any new characters. It’s the same characters in some new scenes. He’s handing a baton to Joss but the course has really been set by Zack. I still believe that despite this tragedy, we’ll still end up with a great movie.”
Our deepest sympathies go out to the Snyder family on their loss. Despite the tragedy, I think it was a lot for Zack and Deborah to stay the course on the film for almost 2 months after. Joss Whedon will definitely have his hands full, but I certainly believe he can make a huge impact on the film in a good way. Are you excited to see Justice League? Let us know in the comments below.
