Talia al Ghul made her adult debut in the fifth season of The CW’s Arrow. She mentored Oliver Queen in the flashback scenes and helped him along the path of becoming a vigilante. It has been reported by EW last month that there will be a big showdown with Talia and her half-sister, Nyssa al Ghul, in the season finale. Actress Lexa Doig, who plays Talia, gives some clues on what to expect for the season finale. She also talks about her initial reaction to finding out she’s portraying Talia and whether or not she’d do a musical crossover. P.S. Doig loves to crack jokes.
“Took a shower,” Doig jokingly tells Nerd Reactor about her preparation for the season finale. “Well… I learned my lines and… showed up to work. [laughs] I can give away nothing. I’m a vault. I’m going to say nothing.”
Doig believes that fans will have a lot of things to be excited about.
“There may or may not be a song or dance number,” says Doig. “I’m being completely facetious. What can they expect? To have their minds blown. There’s so much happening. I know it got leaked that Katrina and I are both in the episode and that we sort of have a face off… which we do. I can say that.”
Talia al Ghul is an iconic Batman character in the comics, animated series and film. She was a love interest and rival for Bruce Wayne. Doig shares her initial reaction to playing the daughter of Ra’s al Ghul.
“I knew who Talia was because I like comics,” says Doig. “I can’t claim absolute fandom because I’m not that committed. It was a bit trippy to be kind of offered the role. Because I wasn’t offered the role of Talia al Ghul. I was offered the role of somebody who trains Oliver. And it was really after I got cast that I found out who she was. And I kind of had a minor trip out about it with my husband. I’m like, ‘Dude! I think I’m playing Talia al Ghul!'”
The world isn’t black and white, especially in Arrow. Yes, that includes the villains.
Doig says, “Well, I don’t see her as the villain. [laughs] An actor who plays the villain never sees their character as the villain. It’s fun. The English accent is a bit of a learning curve. To me, she’s somebody who isn’t necessarily a villain so much as she’s just out to achieve what she wants to achieve. It’s not like she wants to sit back and watch the world burn. She just wants the world to do what she wants it to do.”
Talia has left the League of Assassins to form her own ninja cult. Nyssa has disbanded the League. The two daughters of Ra’s will confront each other, but only one can come out on top.
“I think it depends on the day,” says Doig on whether or not Talia can defeat Nyssa. “Honestly I think they’re fairly evenly match. It’s very funny because Katrina Law and I were talking about what a possible backstory could be in terms of their relationship and where it left off and all these ‘actory’ kind of things that actors do. I reckon that Talia is actually quite a bit older than Nyssa as far as our relationship goes. So it’s possible that Talia even had a part in some of Nyssa’s training before she buggered off and left Nyssa with dear old dad. I think it depends on who’s had a better night sleep.”
The Flash and Supergirl had a musical crossover. It was surely a highlight for fans of musicals, especially of Grant Gustin and the cast’s singing voices. So would Doig consider doing a musical episode?
“Totally, but they’d have to get somebody else to dub me for singing because I’m a terrible singer,” explains Doig. “A good friend of mine who’s on another CW show, JR Bourne… years ago he actually banned me from Christmas caroling. It was like 20 some odd years ago in Toronto. We were all young actors going, ‘Let’s go Christmas caroling and make some money for charity.’ He looked at me and said, ‘Okay, but you hold the cam.’ I’d love to do it. I absolutely love musicals. But I think they’d have to get somebody else to dub me because I’m not a good singer. [laughs] It’s a public service.”
Arrow airs Wednesdays at 8 p.m. PT/ET on The CW.
