Coming from a Polygon interview with co-creator Greg Johnson...
On retaining the elevator convo scenes for Back in the Groove...
“We didn’t need loading times for our levels because we can generate levels a lot faster now. We weren’t initially going to have the elevator sequence in there, because that was there to cover load times. And then the fans said, ‘No! We love that. Those conversations they had in the elevator? My brother and I used to have those conversations together all the time!’ So we put the elevator rides back in, even though it’s not necessary.”
On the ideas for new earthlings...
“A lot of those newest Earthlings came from suggestions in our forum. We got a lot of them from fans. I don’t think there’s any that I didn’t tweak to make them really work in the game. I didn’t take anything completely straight. But I think a lot of fans will be able to say, ‘That one came from me!’ It’s something I’m really looking forward to. I would have liked to do hundreds more, but we got in as much as we could and a lot of them were just really funny.”
Barbarian UFO, Flying Saucerus Barbarus: This odd alien isn't funky at all. Unlike the normal UFO this one will chase you and if he touches you he mutates you and changes your stats in a random way. He also damages you and demotes you! The damage and stat change can be healed by the wizard but the demotion can’t.
Deadly Ice Cream Truck, Driverus Deadlius: This ice cream truck is seriously dangerous. The ice cream it drops is yummy, but the best plan is to just run away.
Football Player, Hut Hut Hutium Footballus: This football player rushes at you and knocks you back, doing damage. If move at the last minute you can get him to knock into other Earthlings.
Gandhi Ji, Homo Gandhius Safeus: If you are within the circle of peace and love that surrounds Gandi Ji no Earthling will hurt you. They suddenly are filled with love and turn away.
King Tut, Tutius Egypticus: For 2 bucks King Tut will follow you for awhile and expose anything that is hidden in the bushes, trees, or houses near you.
Mad Inventor, Crazius Labcoatium: This old guy will fix any broken present for a dollar. Broken presents have a chance of blowing up when you open them. This chance is based on your present skill.
Shady Character, Shadius Tradius: This shady fellow will select one identified present that you have, and offer to swap it for another random present. Swapping is free.
Spanish Inquisitor, Inquisitorium Tortureum Lotsa: The Spanish Inquisitor will judge you and if you are guilty you are sent into the fire to drop down a level. You are always guilty by the way.
Texting Person, Textingus Idiotus: This woman never looks where she is going. Strangely she always seems to run into you. She does moderate damage.
Clipboard Volunteer. Standaroundus Takeyermoneyum: This well meaning person will take some of your money for a good cause. She does a lot of damage and puts you to sleep as well.
Cosplay Nerds, Embarracus Awkwardicus: This group of Earthlings offers you the chance to gamble a buck by rolling dice. Your chance of winning is based on your Luck Stat. A money hat can also help.
Internet Troll, Trollus Internetus Transformium: This troll hurls insults at you which damage and confuse you. “He’s the same character. Initially, he’s like a troll. He hurls insults at you,” Johnson said. “They’re little cusses in word bubbles that fly off of him and hit you and confuse you and hurt you. But if you get close to him, he turns into that scared teenage boy and he says, ‘Help me! Help me!’ And he runs away.”
Riot Guard, Rideus Riotus: This guard on the Segway is fast and persistent. He loves to flatten you and does heavy damage.
