Riverdale Season 1 – What We Learned at WonderCon 2017!

Riverdale Season 1 - What We Learned at WonderCon 2017!

Here’s what we learned about the rest of Riverdale season 1 at WonderCon 2017!

The CW’s Riverdale may be based on the long-running comic book series, but the show has a decidedly darker feel. Today at WonderCon in Anaheim, CA, we got a chance learn more about what’s coming in the second half of Riverdale season 1, and hear from the cast and crew, including KJ Apa (Archie), Lili Reinhart (Betty), Camila Mendes (Veronica), Cole Sprouse (Jughead), Ashleigh Murray (Josie), Luke Perry (Fred), Mädchen Amick (Alice), and Marisol Nichols (Hermione), along with executive producers Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, Sarah Schechter, and Jon Goldwater.

First up, the younger cast spoke about working with veteran stars Nichols, Perry and Amik. Apa said he was “blessed and truly honored to work with Luke Perry over there. I learned so much from him about things in the industry and technical stuff like shooting.” Reinhart said that when she met Amick, they realized they had matching tattoos from the same artist in the same spot. Reinhart called her a role model. Mendes said it’s “very empowering” to be “playing two Latinas” on the small screen.

Fans have been rather vocal on social media about the show, and Goldwater said they were lucky fans have loved their choices. The show was written and shot before the first episode actually aired and he was pleased that fans loved Betty and Jughead getting together.

While speaking about the music on Riverdale season 1 and Josie and the Pussycats, Murray said she’d always disliked her own voice, no matter how many people told her she was good. This helped her get over it. She called it “awesome sauce.” We did learn that Reinhart will be singing in a future episode. Sprouse said that he definitely wouldn’t.

In the sizzle reel, we got a quick look at Archie’s mom, played by ’80s teen icon Molly Ringwald. Perry said he wasn’t so sure about the casting for his own reasons, but that after a few minutes of watching Apa and Ringwald together, he totally changed his mind. Nichols said she “fangirled out completely.” Amick said, “I was like, Roberto, you’d better write me something good to go up against her. Mary Andrews. Good stuff.”

They talked about the shippers, and there are a lot, and how they hate each other and fight online. Goldwater said that one of the first things he pitched with the show was taking the classic comic book love triangle of Betty, Archie and Veronica and said, “we’d do a love triangle between his male best friend Jughead and his female best friend, Betty. Great way to twist the love triangle.” An fan question from Twitter asked about whether or not we’d see Betty and Veronica end up together. Reinhart and Mendes talked about their real-life friendship and said, “there is no Betty without Veronica and no Lili without Cami,” but didn’t give anything away. Goldwater, however, said, “never say never.” About Josie’s love life, we learned from Murray that Josie, “doesn’t have time for anyone who doesn’t have time for her.

Reinhart spoke about what she wanted people to take away from her character. She said, “My big thing with Betty is showing the pressure that we’re under…that it’s okay to crack and to break and that people will still love you. We have to accept our mental health and acknowledge it.

One final moment gave us some ideas for the casting of Veronica’s dad and Jughead’s mom. Mendes hoped for Andy Garcia and Sprouse for Eva Green.
