Steven Spielberg and John Williams to release movie score box set

Steven Spielberg and John Williams are one of the most famous creative partners in movie history, collaborating on dozens of iconic films. When you think about motion picture scores, there’s no doubt a song or two that comes to mind is taken from one of their films, be it Jaws, Raiders of the Lost Ark or Jurassic Park. So, it’s a no-brainer that the pair will release John Williams & Steven Spielberg: The Ultimate Collection, a career-spanning box set that comes out on March 17th.

A truly all-inclusive product, the three-disc set includes 1991’s The Spielberg/Williams Collaboration, 1995’s Williams: The Classic Spielberg Scores and a new disc recorded in 2016 with Williams conducting the Recording Arts Orchestra of Los Angeles. The older compilations feature music from the mid-’70s to the early-’90s, while the new disc includes music from the numerous films the two have worked on since then, including titles like Saving Private Ryan, Minority Report and even last year’s The BFG.

In addition to the music, the collection also includes a DVD, Steven Spielberg and John Williams: The Adventure Continues, a new documentary from Laurent Bouzerau, who’s been chronicling Spielberg’s work for over two decades. Among a variety of topics, Williams discusses “Marion’s Theme” from Raiders of the Lost Ark, a piece of music he reworked to record a new version during the 2016 sessions, as well as getting the chance to perform his music for Spielberg’s films without the film itself.

“I could say, even as I sit with one of the greatest filmmakers in the world, I love playing these pieces without the distraction of the film,” Williams says as Spielberg laughs beside him. “So that we can play all of it and we don’t have to make pianissimo for measure 57 because somebody says something.”

Spielberg adds, “It’s like turning a horse out to pasture and letting him just run headlong.”
