Will he or won’t he? That seems to be the ongoing question regarding Daniel Craig returning to the James Bond franchise. At one point, he said he’d rather slit his wrists and now he’s saying he’d miss it terribly. No one really knows what’s going on with the next movie or his involvement in it, but eventually the baton will have to be passed to a new 007 and several actors are in the mix for that role including Tom Hardy. In an interview with The Daily Beast, the actor spoke about the opportunity.
“You know, there’s a saying amongst us in the fraternity of acting, and in the fellowship of my peer group, that if you talk about it you’re automatically out of the race,” Hardy said. “So I can’t possibly comment on that one! If I mention it, it’s gone.”
Hardy opened up a bit more, though, with the mention of Christopher Nolan. When asked if he would have interest in a Bond film helmed by the man who directed him in The Dark Knight Rises and Inception with his old drama school pal Michael Fassbender as the villain, Hardy expressed excitement, saying, “Oh, wow, Chris would be amazing! Wow, that would be cool. That would be so cool.”
He elaborated by saying, “But Chris Nolan, what a fantastic director for a Bond movie. Because Daniel [Craig] is so good, and what [Sam] Mendes and Barbara [Broccoli] have done has been so impressive, that it would be a very hard reimagination to follow after. I wonder what the next installment of that franchise would become, and I think when you mention someone like Christopher Nolan, that’s a very powerful figure to bring into that world who could bring something new and create something profound—again.”
Hardy can currently be seen in Taboo which airs on Tuesday nights at 10 p.m. EST on FX. He’ll also be seen in another Christopher Nolan film, Dunkirk, which hits theaters on July 21, 2017.
