After months of speculation, Michael Dougherty has been hired to direct the next Godzilla film for Legendary Pictures. Originally, Dougherty and co-writer Zach Shields were hired to write the script. However, rumors arose that Dougherty (Krampus) would also direct the picture, but insiders later refuted the story saying that the deal was only to direct the sequel. After several months of work, Legendary extended an offer for him to direct as well.
The director’s chair went vacant after Gareth Edwards decided to leave the sequel to focus more on smaller projects back in May.
Dougherty and Jordan Vogt-Roberts (Kong: Skull Island) are looking to shepherd these two iconic monsters towards the inevitable battle between King Kong and Godzilla in Godzilla vs. Kong.

Godzilla 2 hits theaters on March 22, 2019 and Godzilla vs. Kong on May 29, 2020.
