War for the Planet of the Apes sneak peek impressions

There was a time when Caesar had a carefree life. His fondest memories is definitely spending time with his former owner and friend, Will Rodman. Those days are long gone. Not only that, but his species have been at odds against the humans, and it’s up to him to lead the apes to victory before they become extinct. Everything has led to a war between the humans and the apes, and moviegoers will get to experience the epic showdown in War for the Planet of the Apes when it releases in the summer of 2017.

During the Fox Showcase in Los Angeles last week, the media was presented with a 42-minute sneak peek of Logan, trailers and clips from Alien: Covenant, and a sneak peek at Gore Verbinski’s A Cure for Wellness. We were also shown clips and footage for War for the Planet of the Apes. Director Matt Reeves was in attendance to set up each clip along with some information about the technology behind bringing the apes to life.

The first footage shown featured the humans on a mission to wipe out the apes. We see a military group in the forest on the hunt. The group readies an attack as they survey an ape haven. With their weapons drawn, we see a gorilla behind them. Is it going to kill the soldier? Nope. It turns out the gorilla has been enlisted and is aiding the humans. Other apes are revealed working for the humans, wearing military outfits and equipment. One soldier with a crossbow takes the first deadly shot, and all hell breaks loose. The humans seem to be winning, but the apes have a surprise of their own, leading to an ape victory. Most of the human soldiers are dead and some have been captured alive. The footage ends, and the fate of the captured humans remain unknown until. The footage recently came straight out of the editing room, so there were some unfinished shots with CG apes.

Another footage shown featured Caesar and his small group on a mission to capture the Colonel, played by Woody Harrelson. One area they have discovered is a deserted human village. There is one villager still there, and he freaks out when he sees the group of apes. He slowly drops the logs he’s carrying and motions to the apes that he means no harm. That was a trick, and he quickly reaches for his weapon and tries to fire a shot. Luckily Caesar was hidden and blasts the guy away with a shotgun.

The last clip that was shown was the introduction of a new ape character. Bad Ape is played by Steve Zahn, and he plays an interesting character since he adds some humor to the ape world.

The first two films have been an emotional roller coaster, and I’m pretty hopeful Matt Reeves can pull off another moving tale of apes vs. humans.

In War for the Planet of the Apes, the third chapter of the critically acclaimed blockbuster franchise, Caesar and his apes are forced into a deadly conflict with an army of humans led by a ruthless Colonel. After the apes suffer unimaginable losses, Caesar wrestles with his darker instincts and begins his own mythic quest to avenge his kind. As the journey finally brings them face to face, Caesar and the Colonel are pitted against each other in an epic battle that will determine the fate of both their species and the future of the planet.

The film stars Andy Serkis as Caesar, Woody Harrelson as the Colonel, Steve Zahn, Amiah Miller, Terry Notary, and Karin Konoval.

War for the Planet of the Apes hits theaters on July 14, 2017.
