John Williams is one of the most famous composers today, having done work on dozens of high-profile films. Many of his themes are ingrained in the minds of people as well as in pop culture as a whole. In addition, he’s also produced scores for Star Wars, the most iconic movie franchise of all time. That’s why it may come as a shock to you that Williams hasn’t seen a single Star Wars film in his life.
In an interview with The Mirror, the 83-year-old admitted this, saying, “I have not looked at the Star Wars films and that’s absolutely true.”
Surely, anyone who reads this needs to know just exactly why the brilliant artist hasn’t seen these wildly popular films or how his music is being used in the final product. Fortunately, Williams provided a little more insight into the matter.
“When I’m finished with a film, I’ve been living with it, we’ve been dubbing it, recording to it, and so on. You walk out of the studio and, ‘Ah, it’s finished’. Now I don’t have an impulse to go to the theater and look at it. Maybe some people find that weird, or listen to recordings of my music very, very rarely.”
To be fair, he does admit that he’s “not particularly proud of that,” but then he makes another shocking admission, saying he doesn’t even consider the songs in the movies classics.
“I don’t know. A lot of them are not very memorable and so on.”
Well, there you have it: the great John Williams hasn’t seen the insanely popular Star Wars films, nor does he think some of the most memorable music ever composed is actually memorable. As if 2016 wasn’t bizarre enough, we now have this piece of depressing news to close out the year.
