I have played Resident Evil 7 with Playstation VR, and I can’t go back to a regular TV screen

Capcom released an updated Resident Evil 7 Teaser: Beginning Hour demo earlier this month, and it’s compatible with the PlayStation VR. The new demo called “Midnight” features new paths and content. I’m loving the new direction of the game, especially since it reminds me of the cancelled Silent Hills from Konami. Virtual reality still isn’t mainstream, but here’s hoping that Resident Evil 7 will help push the technology to more consumers. I had the chance to check out the demo using the PlayStation VR at PlayStation Experience earlier this month. After experiencing Resident Evil 7 in VR, there’s no way that I can play it regularly on a big screen TV. It’s that intense.

Many VR games have you on rails to combat motion sickness. With RE 7, you have two different options for camera movements: smooth turning or quick turns. (You can adjust the angle degree of the quick turns.) At first I was comfortable with the smooth turning, but that quickly changed after some minutes messing around. I started to feel motion sickness due to a lot of forward and backwards movements while turning left and right with the right stick and looking around the house with the VR headset. I then switched it up to the quick turns, and that helped me out a lot. (Your mileage may vary.)

In the demo, you are inside a creepy house with a dark background involving cannibalism. The setting is already claustrophobic, so with the addition of VR, you feel even more vulnerable. Objects feel closer to you and the VR isolates you from the outside world. My fear was heightened when I was in the room with a hanging body bag… with someone else inside with me. I definitely had my moment of freaking out and not knowing what to do because of my adrenaline kicking in. Of course, this had the people in the room with me laughing.

For those who already have the PlayStation VR, get ready for an immersive and horrific experience. And for those who don’t have the VR headset, they’re faced with some issues. For one thing, not everyone is willing to shell out $399 for the PlayStation VR, especially if there aren’t that many VR games. Plus, the VR games that are out now feel more like tech demos. Another issue is that the PS VR is still hard to come by. At the time of this writing, the hardware is currently sold out at Best Buy and Amazon.

Resident Evil 7 will be available for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC on January 24, 2017.
