It’s been a long time since we’ve seen Luc Besson direct a sci-fi film (2014’s Lucy) and even longer since we’ve seen him direct a space opera (1997’s The Fifth Element). But that all changes today as the first teaser trailer for Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets is finally released. Check it out!
Valerian has been a passion project for Besson for a very long time. The film is based on “Valérian and Laureline”, a graphic novel that Besson fell in love with at the age of ten. That graphic novel influenced him to create the fantastical world of The Fifth Element. In fact, it wasn’t until Avatar that Besson finally realized that this novel could be made. “[James Cameron] set the bar so high, I had to rethink,” Besson said in his IMDb Q&A. “It was not big enough, it was not good enough.”

Valerian stars Dane DeHaan (The Amazing Spider-Man 2), Cara Delevingne (Suicide Squad), Clive Owen (Cinemax’s “The Knick”), Ethan Hawke (The Magnificent Seven), John Goodman (10 Cloverfield Lane), and Rihanna.
Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and Laureline (Cara Delevingne) are special operatives for the government of the human territories charged with maintaining order throughout the universe. Under directive from their Commander (Clive Owen), Valerian and Laureline embark on a mission to the breathtaking intergalactic city of Alpha, an ever-expanding metropolis comprised of thousands of different species from all four corners of the universe. Alpha’s seventeen million inhabitants have converged over time- uniting their talents, technology and resources for the betterment of all. Unfortunately, not everyone on Alpha shares in these same objectives; in fact, unseen forces are at work, placing our race in great danger.
Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets travels into theaters in July 2017.
