Salem’s ‘The Reckoning’ episode explained

After the events of last night’s intense episode ‘The Reckoning’, there were many questions left open for all of our characters. Fortunately, we were able to chat with some of the cast about some of the major plots of the episode from this past Paleyfest Fall preview.

The event was showcased to discuss the upcoming season, but after they shared many secrets, we couldn’t post anything until after this revealing episode. The major topic to come up was Mercy’s newfound relationship with Hawthorne, which finally revealed itself last night. So far, it has received positive responses from fans. Elise Eberle, who plays Mercy, exclaimed, “Isn’t that crazy?! You would have never! There are hated characters and when they find each other, it’s so respected. Everybody ends up rooting for them, which is so bizarre because people hate my character!”

Co-creator Adam Simon commented on how he came up with the relationship, “I started with this season thinking, this is the love season. I wanted to combine and recombine characters in that way. Get back in touch with the romance-gothic element. And, I have to say, this was one of those moments that every author dreams of when your characters do something you weren’t expecting and I have to say, I didn’t enter it knowing this was going to happen. I entered it knowing that she was going to be this new, empowered woman and that Hawthorne is going to want his piece of it. Literally, as I sat down to write that first scene, I realized there was an attraction happening there. Literally, it was like they were real and it was happening and I thought, ‘oh!’ So it was one of those cases of the character on paper actually showing you where it was going to go. Then as I teased it out I thought ‘oh my God, of course.’

As for Isaac (Iddo Goldberg), who seemingly was lost, but eventually found hope through a little girl’s belief in him. Iddo Goldberg mentioned he would be getting a sidekick and continue his work in Knocker’s Alley. Goldberg tells us, “He gets his voice. He gets a sidekick. He’s kind of like a detective – a cop working on the beat. That goes one way or another, but it’s been so great this year to talk back to people and tell people what he thinks. He’s always been pulled back and unable to speak his mind. His relationship with Cotton and John has always been where he can speak his mind to them, but otherwise, it’s always been difficult for him.” He further explains that he couldn’t really fight in the major war and focused on the people in the alley. “Charity begins at home. When everyone was busy thinking about outside of Salem and preventing people from coming in and people leaving, I think he was very much concerned with Knocker’s Hole. There was such a problem there that no one was looking after it because these people were the poor. So essentially this is where he comes from.”

With the news of the Devil trying to create a war between the French and British colonies, it seems there will be more bloodshed and gore heading out way. Simon shared, “The stakes are raised. This boy is the devil. So how do you show that? How do you make people feel the stakes of that without pushing them to something?”

Salem airs on Wednesdays at 9pm on WGN America.
