A movie about the British rock band Queen and its lead singer Freddie Mercury has been in the works for some time now, but it looks like the film could be made sooner rather than later. Deadline reported that the project is coming together at 20th Century Fox and New Regency with the help of original producer Graham King of GK Films. Furthermore, Mr. Robot‘s Rami Malek has been announced to play Mercury with X-Men’s Bryan Singer in talks to direct the film titled Bohemian Rhapsody.
The movie has been in development with King for eight years. Sacha Baron Cohen was famously attached to the role with Peter Morgan writing before creative differences ended those plans. There were similar problems when actor Ben Wishaw and director Deter Fletcher were considered for the film.
The most recent version of the project has The Theory of Everything writer Anthony McCarten on the screenplay which will focus on the band and its iconic lead singer. King and Jim Beach will produce. Denis O’Sullivan will serve as executive producer. Fans of the band will be happy to know that original Queen band members Brian May and Roger Taylor will also serve as music producers.
The movie has high hopes with the talents of Malek and King. Malek recently won an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for his role in Mr. Robot. King, who served as executive producer, took away a Best Picture Oscar for 2006’s The Departed. Fox and New Regency also teamed up in the past for consecutive Best Picture Oscar winners 12 Years a Slave and Birdman.
Bohemian Rhapsody is set to shoot early next year.
