Though Star Wars: Episode 1 – The Phantom Menace is considered a low point in the Star Wars franchise by many fans, one aspect of that movie that shines through is the climactic lightsaber battle involving Obi-Wan Kenobi, Qui-Gon Jinn and Darth Maul (arguably the best in the series). The choreography and music certainly help the sequence, but it also benefits from the inclusion of the fierce, acrobatic and highly skilled fan favorite villain Darth Maul, another positive aspect of the film. Fans who want to know more about this black and red devil-like character will get their chance as a Darth Maul comic book will be released in the near future.

The five-issue Marvel Comics miniseries called Star Wars: Darth Maul will be written by Cullen Bunn and illustrated by Luke Ross. It will focus on the villain’s younger days before his appearance in the 1999 prequel film. The comic will present Maul as an untested warrior under the training of Darth Sidious, the future Emperor Palpatine, and will showcase his rage, a desire to take revenge and an unwillingness to take orders.

Bunn will be melding versions of Maul audiences have seen into one, from the aggressive character played by Ray Park in Phantom Menace to the cunning Maul seen in The Clone Wars and Rebels animated series. The writer has also taken a lot of inspiration from the aforementioned fight scene in Phantom Menace, where Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon almost meditatively wait for their encounter while Maul paces.

“I like seeding where that impatience and anger comes from,” Bunn says.

Bunn adds that he finds the fine line between devoted to the dark side or the light fascinating in the struggle between Sith and Jedi and elaborated by saying, “So a big part of the story is Darth Maul’s descent to the dark side and almost being tempted away from it.”

Star Wars: Darth Maul is expected to be released in February of next year.
