Marvel’s Doctor Strange is now in theaters, and the numbers are in for its Thursday night screenings. The film has grossed $9.4 million domestically Thursday night, beating out DreamWorks Animation’s Trolls ($900,000) and Mel Gibson’s Hacksaw Ridge ($750,000).
The film is expected to gross over $70 million for its opening weekend. That number is higher than other Marvel Studio’ film that debuted a new titular hero like Ant-Man ($57.2 million), Thor ($67.7 million), and Captain America: The First Avenger ($65 million).
Cumberbatch has been a fan-favorite actor who has appeared in The Hobbit, Sherlock, and Star Trek Into Darkness. Doctor Strange marks his debut as a superhero. The film is currently a hit with critics with 90% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Doctor Strange is directed by Scott Derrickson (Sinister) and stars Rachel McAdams, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Tilda Swonton, Benedict Wong and Mads Mikkelsen.
Dr. Stephen Strange’s (Benedict Cumberbatch) life changes after a car accident robs him of the use of his hands. When traditional medicine fails him, he looks for healing, and hope, in a mysterious enclave. He quickly learns that the enclave is at the front line of a battle against unseen dark forces bent on destroying reality. Before long, Strange is forced to choose between his life of fortune and status or leave it all behind to defend the world as the most powerful sorcerer in existence.
