Every hero has a journey, but not many have them that are nearly as exciting or magnificent as those of everyone’s favorite tomb raider. Long-time fan and Senior Community Manager Meagan Marie has teamed up with Prima Games to write the ultimate compendium of everything that is Tomb Raider. This hardcover tome goes into depth about each of the award-winning games, and almost every single one of them did win awards. The book doesn’t miss a beat, whether it’s from the beginning of Core Design (the original company behind Tomb Raider) to Crystal Dynamics’ take.
The first half of the book focuses on each main Tomb Raider titles all in chronological order. This also includes the separate Lara Croft arcade games like Guardian of Light and Temple of Osiris. Ones that are not included in the first half are the various games released on handhelds or other various non-console platforms.
Now obviously Tomb Raider as a franchise is way bigger than just a game. It has expanded into movies, toys, comics, novels, and the fans. The author compiled information, pictures, and interviews from over 200 different sources including writers, artists, fans and even many of the creators behind the games. The information on every page is complemented with various artwork, screenshots, and various other assetts from the game, many of which have never been published before. It also goes into depth with bios and interviews with the various voice actors, live-action models, composers, artists and many other people who played a role in creating one of today’s biggest gaming icons.
Final Reaction
It would be impossible to include everything in the 20 Years of Tomb Raider, but it does have something fans will love to read about whether it’s something they already know or something that’s never revealed. The book is like a tomb with all the hidden secrets of what went into making each game, the decisions behind the various changes we saw as the franchise evolved, and even some of the games that never quite made it to the market. Some of the sections in the book that stand out are the behind-the-scenes portions detailing the two movies and the process that went into getting them made, as well as the inception of Core Design and its creation of Tomb Raider as an intellectual property.
Final Rating: 4.5/5 Atoms
