It was a big night on Sunday with the premiere of the seventh season of AMC’s The Walking Dead. The show performed 16 percent higher than season 6’s premiere. The season 7 premiere received an 8.4 rating in the 18-49 viewers with 17 million viewers tuning in. However, the premiere record still goes to the fifth season with an 8.7 rating and 17.3 million total viewers.
Spoilers Ahead
The cliffhanger for season 6 had Negan beating the crap out of a member of Rick’s group with Lucille, a baseball bat wrapped in barbed wire. Many fans were upset because the identity wasn’t revealed, with fans having to wait months to find out. Now that the season 7 premiere has aired, it was revealed that Negan killed two members, Abraham and Glenn.

Many fans who weren’t able to watch the premiere avoided social media due to rampant spoilers. With fans expecting heavy spoilers to be released, this is likely the reason for the huge premiere numbers.
The premiere also got the attention of the Parents Television Council. It criticized a show aimed for adults that it was too violent.
