Get ready to explore the Alola Region in Pokémon Sun and Moon, when it releases exclusively on the Nintendo 3DS next month. At a recent press event, we had the opportunity to get hands-on time with the game and learn about what to expect in the next installment of the Pokémon series.
Talking with a Nintendo representative, we learned that both Pokémon Gyms and HMs are a thing of the past. While gyms have been a staple of the series since Pokémon Red and Blue, Alola will instead feature the Island Challenge Trials. In the Challenge Trials, trainers will be tasked with different quests to complete which can be anything from taking pictures to meeting certain requirements to pass. It offers trainers a new way to enjoy the game rather than solely focusing on Pokémon battles.
HMs were always more of an annoyance in the game, where the real purpose of the “HM Slave” was to be there whenever you need it to clear a certain obstacle or travel to a different area. Thankfully that precious space in your Pokémon team won’t need to go to waste anymore, thanks to a new function that will allow you to call certain Pokémon that will fit your needs at the time, while not being part of your active team.
If you’ve had the chance to play the Sun and Moon demo already, you may have noticed a few notable changes. One of those changes is the ability to see what moves are effective against your opponent’s Pokémon. Once you’ve defeated a Pokémon in battle, from that point on you will be able to see which of your active Pokémon’s moves will be able to do more damage, and this will carry over to trainer battles. You won’t need to remember what moves will be more effective against Pokémon of multiple types since all that information will be right there. It is great for newcomers who don’t really want to remember all that information.
One more thing you may not have noticed is the ability to see your Pokémon’s battle status via the menu. In previous Pokémon titles, you would have to keep track on any buffs and debuffs, including how many you may have used. This plays a bigger role during Trainer battles more than anything,, but now being able to keep track by looking at your active Pokémon is very beneficial.
Pokémon Sun and Moon will launch worldwide on November 18th.
