Whenever Brewery Ommegang releases their new brew, I am always crossing my fingers for a Belgian ale, because they know how to do Belgian ales right. This is no exception with their latest brew: Valar Dohaeris Tripel Ale. Unlike its predecessor Valar Morghulis Dubbel Ale, Valar Dohaeris is completely different. One is dark and one is light. The Valar Dohaeris is a 9% ABV Belgian-style Tripel and is a light and refreshing brew perfect for the fall season.
We were able to sample a bottle and taste the finished product which has been released, along with the Valar Morghulis in a set. The pour was into a tulip glass and poured this golden copper with a fluffy white head and great lacing and retention. The smell was grains and honey along with the taste of honey and candied sugar. The flavor is very sweet and smooth, with a bit of spice that isn’t overpowering. The finish is moderately dry with a hint of yeast. The taste is light but provides a creamy feel, which is perfect for the fall season. This would be especially perfect during a Thanksgiving meal. The great thing about Valar Dohaeris is the fact that it is so hearty, it ages well over time, so it could be stocked up for the next few seasons.
The presentation of the 750 mL bottle, like Valar Morghulis, is the two-headed coin that Arya Stark carried, given to her by Jaqen H’ghar, one of the “Faceless Men of Braavos”. The background is the wall of faces (minus the faces) from the House of Black and White. The name, Valar Doheris, is the response to the common Braavos greeting “Valar Moghulis” (All men must die) and directly translate to “All men must serve”. Hence, they are accompanied together as a gift pack with an exclusive Game of Thrones glass at major retailers for $22.99. For fans who just want to enjoy the taste of Valar Dohaeris, the individual 750 mL corked bottle is available at major retailers with the recommended retail price of $9.99 per bottle.
