Ewan McGregor recalls embarrassing first experience with George Lucas

Ewan McGregor was the perfect casting choice for the young Obi-Wan Kenobi in the Star Wars prequel and was definitely one of the few redeeming qualities of that trilogy. In a recent interview, while discussing his directorial debut American Pastoral starring Jennifer Connelly and Dakota Fanning, McGregor talked about his first experience with George Lucas:

“I had to go to studios in Watford, north of London, where they shot all the Harry Potter movies. I remember going there, meeting George, and being allowed to read the script. I had to read it in the producer’s office, like literally, being almost locked in with the script, so that it doesn’t get leaked. And then being shown around the sets with George. There was a great big submarine thing that I end up in with Liam and Jar Jar Binks. And I remember looking at this huge polystyrene thing that had been made to look like a submarine, and there was a cockpit. And I looked at it and I went, ‘Will we go under?’ He looked at me and went, ‘What?’ I said, ‘Will we go underwater with it?’ And he looked at me like I was insane. He said, ‘None of that is real, you know.’ And I went, ‘Oh. Yeah.'”

Since McGregor is a fan of Star Wars, you can imagine that he was probably enthralled with the filming and believed the movie magic of George Lucas was real. You also might recall the scene after leaving Gungan City when Qui-Gon Jinn gives a bit of foreshadowing by stating, “There’s always a bigger fish.” But in this case with McGregor, there is definitely no bigger fish than George Lucas.
