Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare is just around the corner, and we’re heading to the second Beta weekend coming up. If you’ve pre-ordered Infinite Warfare for the PS4, then you have access to both weekends. But that’s not all, now all PS4 users will have a chance to access the beta weekend without pre-ordering Infinite Warfare. I had the opportunity to check out the Beta, which you can see in the video above. Here are my thoughts on Infinite Warfare so far:
One of the biggest changes to the COD series was taking it to space. It seemed like a natural progression with Advance Warfare taking war to a potential futuristic war with exoskeletons. There are plenty of ground combat but with slightly enhanced gameplay such as boost jumps, sliding and wall running. This reminded me a lot of Titanfall, but that’s not a bad thing seeing as how much I enjoyed it. And the shift to space is very seamless since there is no change at all as to how your character reacts to its surroundings, like floating. In one match I didn’t even know I was in a space station until I died and my body just floated away.
Creating futuristic weapons are always a challenge due to always trying to bring something new as well as a bit realistic, depending on the game. Infinite Warfare has a great selection of weapons that feel natural but also empowering. My favorite gun was the EBR-800, which is a sniper that can be fired in full auto mode. Most other weapons function like current generation weapons but with a cosmetic upgrade, except the Claw. That was an insane weapon that can clear groups of people in seconds. The ballistic rounds just add to how deadly that weapon can be.
The Combat Rigs gives the player the ability to fully customize their character, down to perks and payload. The Warfighter, for example, uses the Claw, but also has two other payloads: Overdrive and Combat Focus. As you level up your character through online matches, you gain more items to customize the look (like armor and taunts) and weapons as well. This isn’t really new, but it gives you the opportunity to play around with your characters gear like helmet and armor.
During the beta, there were 4 different game matches available: Team Deathmatch, Kill Confirmed, Domination, and Defender. Its a good mix of matches to suit all sorts of playstyles. Deathmatch is nothing new, but Kill Confirmed has a nice twist that has you pick up the dog tags of kills to get points towards your team score. This feature has been around for many COD games and is a welcome one seeing as I had the most fun out of all the match types. Defender appears to be a new style match for COD. It has the players grab a ball that accumulates points. The ball can be thrown across players, or even enemies, which prevents them from firing and an easy kill. I’ve seen a lot of players play creatively with the ball; I could’ve sworn it was hopping around like a soccer ball.
If you’re still on the fence about Infinite Warfare, be sure to check it out and see for yourself this weekend during the second Beta weekend. Remember, all PS4 players will have access to it, so hop on and decide if it’s worth getting.
Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare hit stores November 4, 2016.
