With all the controversy surrounding the newly announced live-action Mulan film, it looks like Disney is trying to have an Asian director helm the project. Academy Award-winning director Ang Lee was approached to direct, but according to The Hollywood Reporter, Lee declined.
THR nor Lee did not announce the reason. With Sony and Disney both releasing a Mulan film in the next few years, the studios could be fighting for the acclaimed director. Unfortunately for Disney, Sony via TriStar Productions will release Lee’s next film Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk.
The live-action film is conducting a global search for a Chinese actress to play the part of Mulan. Disney has also announced they will have an all-Asian cast, after reports that the story will feature a white man saving Mulan.
Mulan is set to release November 2nd, 2018.
