Testing out Titanfall 2’s new modes, maps and Titans (preview)

Nerd Reactor was invited to test out some of the new modes, maps and Titans for Titanfall 2‘s multiplayer at Respawn Entertainment. The new modes we played should be familiar to Titanfall players including Attrition, Capture the Flag and Last Titan Standing. There are also new maps to spice up the scenery, new Tactical abilities like the Phase Shift and AWOL, and new Titans like Legion, Ronin and Northstar.

New Titans

Players who have played the tech test should be familiar with Ion and Scorch. With the new Titans added, the matches become even more epic and hectic. Legion is made for those who love Gatling guns as it sports the Power Canon. You see a Pilot or Titan, let loose and watch as their health goes down fast. Ronin is a close quarters Titan, and the best strategy is to hit and run. The Tone Titan is equipped with the 40mm Tracker Cannon and Salvo Core. Then there’s Northstar, the Titan sniper with one of the coolest specials, the Flight Core. Once activated, it sends the Titan hovering above the sky as it lays waste to the enemies below with a barrage of missiles. It’s a sight to see, but just because you’re flying over your enemies doesn’t mean they can’t attack back.

New Tactical Abilities

The tech test had Tactical abilities like Stim, Grapple, Cloak, Pulse Blade, and Holo Pilot. Now there’s also the Phase Shift and AWOL. The Phase Shift allows you to teleport a short distance and AWOL gives you a temporary protective shield.

If you love to snipe from far away, a protective shield is very useful. You’ll still have to worry about enemies ambushing you from behind, but if you’re at a good spot and get caught from the front, you’ll have the advantage. I didn’t get to experience this, but I heard that you can Phase Shift on a Pilot, causing them to die.

New Modes

The new modes revealed in Titanfall 2 should be familiar to Titanfall fans: Capture the Flag, Last Titan Standing and Attrition. Attrition plays out like the traditional team deathmatch, except that each side gets their own grunts. Capture the Flag is pretty self-explanatory as you’ll have to capture the enemy flag while also protecting your own. The objective for Last Titan Standing is to kill all the enemy Titans, and there are no respawns.

My favorite mode during my preview is Capture the Flag. Having a Titan around changes the dynamic since you can set them to guard an area near the flag.

New Maps

We got to test out the new maps like Black Water Canal, a manufacturing facility, and Eden, an abandoned city with an elevated train system. Respawn has been doing great so far in terms of balancing them out for Titans and Pilots.

Titanfall 2 will be available for the PS4, Xbox One and PC on October 28th.
