Last week Crunchyroll and Funimation announced some big news. It was revealed that the two would be collaborating together with future anime releases. This new partnership would see Crunchyroll streaming all of Funimation’s simulcasted releases on its website while Funimation would focus more on releasing Broadcast Dubs for not only its titles but also Crunchyroll’s acquisitions. It’s huge news for multiple reasons. Acquiring anime is a tricky and expensive move as various companies bid for the rights to a series outside of Japan. With multiple companies releasing animes in North America, it just means the bids can get high. With this new partnership, Funimation and Crunchyroll have a pretty big advantage over other companies. It was also revealed some time ago that Crunchyroll would be working on English dub releases, as well as releasing series on Blu-ray and DVD, but with Funimation already having a huge foothold in that market, it makes a lot of sense for Crunchyroll to work together, letting them focus on their strengths.
