We hardly knew him. For the short time we did, we saw that he was highly irritable, hard to please, but always the voice of reason with a strict adherence to rules and regulations. Of course, I’m talking about Frank Grimes (voiced by Hank Azaria), who made a big impact in his only appearance on The Simpsons on May 4, 1997 in episode 176 titled “Homer’s Enemy’. For those of you who thought his time with us was far too short, you’ll be happy to know that the character will return to The Simpsons for the 600th episode where he’ll deliver his first lines of dialogue in almost 20 years.
If you’ll recall, Grimes was a new employee at the nuclear power plant who became increasingly annoyed with Homer’s incompetence and obsessed with convincing co-workers that Homer was a danger to colleagues and unfit to work at the plant. Desperate and unhinged, Grimes demonstrated Homer’s indifference to safety by pretending to be Homer while performing dangerous acts like handling high-voltage cables without gloves, an act that proved to be fatal.
Grimes will be back for the annual Halloween episode, “Treehouse of Horror”, albeit in a limited role. Apparently, his apparition will join forces with Sideshow Bob and a few others over a shared hatred of the Simpsons.
“They’re forming a sinister squadron of Simpsons enemies to try to kill the Simpsons,” executive producer Al Jean tells Entertainment Weekly. “If that doesn’t make people tune in, I don’t know what else we can say.”
The series has referenced Grimes several times since his demise and even introduced his son, but we’ve yet to hear him speak until now and Jean says, “he’s certainly madder at Homer than ever.”
