Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence create romance and fear among the stars in ‘Passengers’ trailer

“The Universe, so far as we can observe it, is a wonderful and immense engine; its extent, its order, its beauty, its cruelty, makes it alike impressive.” – Philosopher George Santayana

If there’s one genre out there that can still make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up, it’s more definitely the Sci-fi genre, specifically outer space films. It’s not because of how scary the monsters are, or how helpless the characters are, but by one sheer fact: it is extremely plausible. No matter what kind of space flick you can think of, we, as humanity, have yet to reach our full potential in our technology, and have barely begun to scratch the surface of what our possibilities are, as far as space travel.

People who remember films like 1979’s Alien know that the year the events occur was 2122. Other films, such as the recent 2007 film, Sunshine, take place only fifty years ahead of its release date, putting the events at the year 2057. What I’m getting at is this: we have yet to even begin to achieve the peak of our technological development, and, thus, make all things that we’ve seen, or will see, that much more plausible. It is not that films about space scare us because of the creatures or because of the intense music; they scare us because seeing mankind just floating in space, having the nearest related life-form be millions miles away, being all alone in the sheer blackness of space. Yeah, that scares us. And with the impression we get from the new trailer for Director Morten Tyldum’s film, Passengers, it looks as though we’ll get a firsthand look at what that experience feels like.

In Passengers, Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt are two people onboard a spaceship transporting them to a new life on another planet. The trip takes a deadly turn when their hibernation pods mysteriously wake them 90 years before they reach their destination. As Jim and Aurora try to unravel the mystery behind the malfunction, they begin to fall for each other, unable to deny their intense attraction… only to be threatened by the imminent collapse of the ship and the discovery of the truth behind why they woke up.

What do you think of the film? What are some of your favorite Sci-fi films? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!

Passengers is set to release in theaters December 21, 2016.
