Japanese novel and anime property Sword Art Online is apparently stepping out of the digital world and into the world of live-action television. The SAO story centers around a boy, Kazuto “Kirito” Kirigaya, who enters a brand new MMOVR game that becomes altered, trapping thousands of players within the digital game. Their only hope of escape is beating the game without dying. If they die in the game, it will result in the death of the player.
Global live-action rights to Sword Art Online have been acquired from Kadokawa by Skydance Media. It will be helmed by Laeta Kalogridis (Avatar, Terminator Genisys), who will be writing the pilot episode and then serving as the executive producer alongside David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Marcy Ross.
Skydance Media is apparently also planning “a full-scale and wide-ranging set of live action franchise extensions across our business verticals.”
We could see many other of its purchased properties getting the same treatment. As of now, Sword Art Online is its only listed anime property, but who knows whats series could be next if SAO becomes a hit.
