Suicide Squad director discusses cut footage involving Slipknot

Slipknot spoilers ahead

If you don’t remember the character Slipknot from Suicide Squad, you’re probably not alone. With his omission from the opening character introductions and lack of screen time coupled with the sheer amount of supervillains in the mix, it’s easy to forget the character’s existence.

However, according to director David Ayer who spoke on The Empire Film podcast, the filmmakers did shoot additional footage for Slipknot which included his introduction sequence. The footage was removed from the theatrical cut of the film, though, to trim the time and avoid clutter.

“Yeah we shot one,” said Ayer, “but after a point it became overloaded, ya know, so you have to cull and pick and choose your battles, and Slipknot gets his head blown off pretty quick, so ya know, I made a commitment early on not to try and create some kind of misdirect because when you have that many characters every frame of real estate is priceless, and I didn’t want to invest in that real estate to create some misdirect because after opening night everyone knows he dies anyway.”

Apparently, Adam Beach did some training to prepare for the film and practiced strangling techniques. Ayer was asked if the cut footage involved this skill set.

“Ya know, that might be more about his sort of personal journey to getting into the character more than anything, but I guess it does make sense if it’s a rope guy. I could see where he could make those connections.”

If you’re a hardcore fan of Slipknot, you can still read about him in the pages of DC comics, but don’t expect too much from him in Suicide Squad.
