Devolver Digital has announced a new high-octane, high-violence game to be added to its publisher’s portfolio. That game is SCUM, an open world, multiplayer survival game co-developed by Gamepires and Croteam, the studio behind both the Serious Sam series and The Talos Principle.
Scum follows in the footsteps of media like The Running Man and Smash TV. The future is a place where blood sport has been revived for the viewing masses pleasure. According to the developers, SCUM is the prime time headliner for the fictional TV network TEC1. This network gets mondo ratings from its programming featuring violent and bloody entertainment (Anybody else seeing a parallel to Devolver Digital here?). The game takes place during SCUM’s second season which has seen the action move from the abandoned Federal Penitentiary on Alcatraz Island to the fictional island of Bagne de Cayenne which has a history of violent incarceration much in the vain of infamous colonial prisons of the British and French empires. On the island, prisoners are dropped into a fight to the death against each other and the environment.
The official announcement gives more info stating:
“Scum evolves the multiplayer open world survival game with unprecedented levels of character customization, control, and progression where knowledge and skills are the ultimate weapons for long-term survival. Players will balance base level needs with knowledge-based skills to manage everything from nourishment, metabolic rate, and body mass to weapons proficiency, combat style, and security systems hacking. Dominate the island with your skills, cunning, and strategies to achieve higher levels of game and receive powerful gifts from corporate sponsors and, if you happen to slip up and die, get resurrected by the show’s producers with all your valuable skills still intact.”
SCUM is due on the PC via Early Access in 2017.
