Due to the recent success of Pokemon Go, fans of other franchises are craving something for their own. Harry Potter fans are at the top of the list demanding an augmented reality game for the wizarding universe. A petition to Warner Brothers and Niantic, the Pokemon Go developer, is in the works and has nearly reached their goal of 45,000 signatures.
News broke on several pop-culture websites such as UPROXX and HelloGiggles claiming that Niantic was indeed in development to make a Harry Potter AR. Sadly, a bad source was planted on fake news site JTXH, stirring up the cauldron among Internet rumors. JTXH quotes an interview between IGN and Niantic developer, Marcus Figueroa, “We have acquired the rights for the app. The demand for this title was absolutely insane, so we figured we’d give it a shot. If we’re lucky we might see a launch by early 2017, but it’s hard to tell this early in the project.” However, this person and IGN article quoted doesn’t exist! Way to get my wand in a knot.
It would be fantastic to see a Harry Potter AR game. Warner Brothers has released apps in the past in conjunction with movie releases, the latest one being Harry Potter – Spells. It allows you to duel your friends via Bluetooth and learn spells by waving your phone in a particular pattern using the phone’s accelerometer. Once you get the hang of it, it’s sort of fun, but it doesn’t engage you for more than 10 minutes at a time.
With the upcoming release of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, it seems like a missed opportunity for Warner Brothers to pass on this new gaming technology. Just think, instead of catching Pokemon, you can wander the lands catching magical creatures. Find Pigwidgeon instead of Pidgey!
