Executive Producer Bryan Fuller (Hannibal, Pushing Daisies) revealed a number of major new pieces of information about his new CBS All Access series, Star Trek: Discovery during the Television Critics Association Press Tour today. Chief among the big reveals is that the leading character will be played by a female, and she will not be the captain. Although Star Trek series throughout the years have always leaned heavily on ensembles, the focal point of every series has always been around a strong and memorable captain (see, Kirk, Picard, Janeway, Sisko). Instead the main character will be a Lieutenant Commander, which should lead to some very new perspectives on life aboard a starship.
Fuller also revealed some other details around the show including the fact that the show will take place 10 years prior to Captain Kirk taking command of the USS Enterprise and that it ties into an existing event in the Federation’s history that was referenced in the original series. Given the timeline of the show, it is quite possible that we might see some familiar faces in the new TV series. However, as Fuller did confirm that his story takes place in the prime timeline, don’t expect any visits by Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, or John Cho.
