I’ll admit that I wasn’t a big fan of the first Titanfall game, but so far Respawn Entertainment has made me a believer for its sequel, Titanfall 2, after I got the chance to preview the game during E3 in June and a press event two weeks ago. Fans and newcomers can expect a lot of sweet new additions including a single-player campaign and new Titans, weapons, and abilities in multiplayer. (Check out our hands-on with the E3 demo.) With the press event, I was able to spend around 3 hours with the many different multiplayer modes (Bounty Hunt, Pilots vs. Pilots, and Amped Hardpoint), and I have been enjoying it a lot.
My new favorite ability is the grappling hook; I no longer feel vulnerable as a Pilot going up against a Titan. The grappling hook is a tactical that you can choose, with the avatar being a robot. The type of tactical ability you choose will determine the type of Pilot you’ll have, and this will help other players know what your ability is. For the grappling hook, my strategy consisted of looking for a Titan and finding a nearby roof or tall spot. Once I’m at my spot, I would aim at the Titan and release the grappling hook. I then pray that I can get past the Titan’s defenses and survive enemy fire. Once I land on top of it, I am then able to remove a battery or drop a bomb inside of it. To keep players from overusing it, there is a cooldown.
Bounty Hunt is a new mode where two teams, each with six players, are tasked with surrounding a bounty area and killing enemy Pilots and grunts. They’ll get a better score for depositing bonus points at the bank between waves. If you die before reaching the bank, you’ll lose points. My favorite mode so far is the classic Pilots vs. Pilots. This is your more traditional team deathmatch (8v8), and there will be no Titans to help change the tide of the battle. The third mode I got to play was Amped Hardpoint, which is similar to King of the Hill. Pilots will earn points by successfully going to any of the three different hardpoints as they defend and take control. They will earn double the points by amping the hardpoints.
Soon players will get a chance to get some hands-on with the game when the open beta releases this Friday, August 19th, on the PlayStation 4 or Xbox One.
The full game will be available for the PS4, Xbox One and PC on October 28, 2016.
