PvP games in general are hotbeds for player toxicity. Give a bunch of competitive video gamers an outlet to vent frustration or troll their vanquished foes, and inevitably, there will be some… unkind words being tossed about.
So it was rather fun to see Blizzard Entertainment try a different approach to dealing with player toxicity in its smash hit Overwatch. On a recently released patch to Blizzard’s public test realm (PTR), the Overwatch team made it so typing “gg ez” (troll shorthand for “good game, easy win”) would automatically be replaced with an alternate message. Some of these messages include:
- Well played! I salute you all!
- I feel very, very small… please hold me…
- Mommy says people my age shouldn’t suck their thumbs.
Naturally, thoughts on this change are quite mixed.
