5 Songs to Listen to while playing No Man’s Sky

It’s been a while since I have geeked out this hard over a game, in fact I have been so excited for this game that I have been working on a special Spotify music playlist that will be acting as my personal No Man’s Sky soundtrack. I have consulted with many friends, and even opened it up as a topic of conversation on a recent episode of the Videogame BANG! podcast. Here is what we have come up with as the top 5 songs to listen to while exploring the 69 Quintuple-Billion planets and coldness of space in No Man’s Sky.

Honorable Mentions: Madness by Muse, Run by Gnarls Barkley, Dirty Harry by Gorillaz

#5 Hooked on a Feeling by Blue Suede

Starting off the list is a song that in all likelihood would have never made this list if it weren’t for a little movie called Guardians of the Galaxy. Blue Suede’s Hooked on a Feeling, for many years, was just known as the “Ally McBeal Dancing Baby Song,” until the marketing geniuses over at Marvel decided to make it the anthem for one of their most successful movies to date. Several listeners of the podcast, including our co-host Jessica, were saying that the Soundtrack to GotG would set the perfect ambiance for drifting along the open world galaxy of No Man’s Sky while you are searching for adventure, potentially challenging turd-face alien species to a dance-off, bro!

#4 Intergalactic by the Beastie Boys

If you want to bring up the energy level a little bit, look no further than the Beastie Boys hit song, Intergalactic. A playlist can easily feature this song from the Beasties, along with possibly Sabotage, right next to more current tracks from the likes of Daft Punk, or even Muse. The Beasties song features a hook that includes a pair of things that No Man’s Sky has quite a lot of.. “Intergalagtic, Planetary, Planetary, Intergalactic.” Much like our #5 song when we were talking about Guardians of the Galaxy music, tracks like this will keep the mood light, and the energy levels high, while you’re probing various solar systems, looking for alien life and resources on your journey to the center of the universe.

#3 Speak to Me/ Breathe by Pink Floyd

While the songs we have been talking about up until this moment have been more exciting and full of optimism, you have to imagine how you might feel after 20, 50, 100 hours of gameplay. Once you have been traversing the cosmos for weeks or months things are going to slow down and get more and more retrospective. You will be so consumed with this game and begin questioning the real life universe, and begin pondering life and existence, itself! How far away are we from intelligent life coming to earth, are we alone in the world? Is there a god? These are all great thoughts to have while sitting in a dark room, playing No Man’s Sky, while listening to this – or any other track for that matter- from Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon album.

#2 Across the Universe by The Beatles (David Bowie Cover is Amazing too)

Admittedly, my musical preferences might be really shining through now. I was the weirdo kid in high school during the mid-2000’s who had black lights, along with posters of bands from the ’60s and ’70s, and would spend hours in his room listening to Pink Floyd, The Beatles, and Led Zeppelin on a record player. In that atmosphere, you can imagine that I might have fallen asleep and had some really weird dreams about space and the universe! That’s why the game No Man’s Sky is sort of like a dream come true for me. One song that will be an absolute must for any No Man’s Sky soundtrack is The Beatles Across the Universe. While, personally, the original will always be the best, there is a cover version of this song by Ziggy Stardust himself, David Bowie, that will also most definitely have a spot on my NMS playlist.

#1 Space Oddity by David Bowie

Absolutely no song has ever captured the coldness of being alone in space as well as David Bowie did with Space Oddity in 1969. The late great David Bowie was an enigma, who used the cosmos as his musical playground. This, along with many great songs from The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, will have permanent residence on my, and many others, No Man’s Sky playlist. While we are floating in our tin cans going from planet to planet, geeks like me will be creating fictional storylines and narrative to our adventures. Maybe Major Tom isn’t dead? It’s possible that the end of Bowie’s Space Odyssey  was just a lead in to our characters expedition into the unknown.

Well that’s my list! What is your Top 5 No Man’s Sky songs that you will be adding to your playlists?!
