Tom Holland reveals comics that inspired Spider-Man: Homecoming

Tom Holland spider-man: Homecoming
The next film starring Peter Parker is Spider-Man: Homecoming, due out later this summer. Fans can expect to see the character as a modern-day teenager, navigating the difficult world of high school while also fighting bad guys. Fortunately, Brian Michael Bendis wrote a similar take on Spider-Man and it’s this series of comic books that actor Tom Holland used as inspiration for his performance as the web slinger.

We’ve already seen two series of Spider-Man films for a grand total of five movies released in the last 15 years. That’s because he’s a wildly popular character who attracts audiences and, more importantly, their money. But how does one keep the audience’s attention after so many films? How do you make an excellent Spider-Man film that’s not the same ol’ thing? Well, like in most situations, consulting the work of Bendis doesn’t hurt.

“The comics that sort of resonated with me most and I used for my performance was the Ultimate Spider-Man comics,” Holland told IGN. “They’re so modern and up-to-date with what’s happening in the world right now. For me, it was just a really, really strong thing to follow and I have so many screenshots on my phone from like lines that were written that I stole to use for the movie.”

It’s a very impressive run that Holland is consulting. And many Marvel comic fans consider Ultimate Spider-Man an exceptional comic book and some of Bendis’ best work. It also helped him become one of the most sought-after writers in the business.

Ultimate Universe

Released in 2000, the comic book introduced readers to the Ultimate Universe. (It’s outside of the Marvel universe and detaches itself from that continuity.) With this new universe, writers like Bendis introduced some of Marvel’s most popular characters to a new audience. Not to mention, there was no burden of having to adhere to decades worth of canon. This way, they could start fresh, be more accessible and take the characters in bold new directions. The comic ran for 160 issues before relaunching. As a result, a new book introduced Mile Morales as the Ultimate Universe Spider-Man.

So, if you want the full experience, you could read several issues of Ultimate Spider-Man. After that, go see Spider-Man: Homecoming which hits theaters on July 7, 2017.
