Bong Joon Ho Interested in Making a Musical

Academy Award-winner Bong Joon Ho (Parasite) revealed during an interview with Empire that he would love to branch out a bit from his usual genre-medley in order to make a musical, but it would have to be “different” than classic musicals of the past.

“I would love to make a musical,” the filmmaker told the outlet. “Characters would begin singing, then think, ‘Oh my God, fuck this, this is too cheesy,’ and stop suddenly. There are amazing musical films, like Singin’ In The Rain. But when I watch them, I feel very embarrassed and start blushing. So it would have to be… different.”

It was announced last month that Grand Central Publishing will be releasing the complete storyboards for Parasite as a book, which is set to hit stores on May 19. Additionally, Parasite will be available to stream exclusively on Hulu beginning April 8.

Parasite is set amidst the two families, the Parks, the picture of aspirational wealth, and the Kims, rich in street smarts but not much else. Be it chance or fate, these two houses are brought together and the Kims sense a golden opportunity. Masterminded by college-aged Ki-woo, the Kim children expediently install themselves as tutor and art therapist, to the Parks. Soon, a symbiotic relationship forms between the two families. The Kims provide “indispensable” luxury services while the Parks obliviously bankroll their entire household. When a parasitic interloper threatens the Kims’ newfound comfort, a savage, underhanded battle for dominance breaks out, threatening to destroy the fragile ecosystem between the Kims and the Parks.

The film stars Song Kang Ho, Lee Sun-Kyun (A Hard Day), Cho Yeo-Jeong (Obsessed), Choi Woo-Shik (Okja), Park So-Dam (The Priests), and Chang Hyae-Jin (Poetry). The film was written and directed by Bong Joon Ho.
