The Rise of Skywalker director says he’s ‘never been great at endings’

There’s a lot of pressure for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker to finish strong. And no one’s feeling more pressure than J.J. Abrams. The director is returning to the trilogy that he started with Star Wars: The Force Awakens in 2015. Abrams recently spoke with The New York Times about The Rise of Skywalker, and he admitted that he finds endings to be difficult.

“I’ve never been great at endings,” confessed Abrams. “I don’t actually think I’m good at anything, but I know how to begin a story. Ending a story is tough… Sticking this landing is one of the harder jobs that I could have taken. But that was why it felt worthy of saying yes.”

However, Abrams noted that the real trick is ensuring that The Rise of Skywalker feels like its own movie, while also serving as a conclusion to a legendary saga.

“Endings are the thing that scare me the most,” said Abrams. “This is about bringing this thing to a close in a way that is emotional and meaningful and also satisfying in terms of actually answering [as many] questions as possible… So if years from now, someone’s watching these movies, all nine of them, they’re watching a story that is as cohesive as possible.”

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will hit theaters on December 20.
